Bravery in the Courtroom: Supporting Survivors Through the Legal System

At Jannawi Family Centre, we stand alongside survivors as they navigate the justice system, ensuring they feel supported and empowered throughout the process. Recently, we provided court support to a 16-year-old girl and her mother as they gave evidence in an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) matter against the mother’s former partner.

Despite the emotional weight of the situation, both mother and daughter showed immense bravery as they faced aggressive cross-examination from the barrister representing the man. Shockingly, the teenage girl was forced to give evidence in person—a requirement that is no longer necessary under current legal provisions. After breaking down in tears, she was finally offered the remote Audio-Visual Link (AVL) room, which should have been provided from the outset.

Despite the distressing experience, both found strength in speaking their truth in front of the perpetrator. They left the courtroom feeling empowered, not because of the court’s eventual decision—which remains adjourned—but because they had reclaimed their voice and demonstrated their resilience.

Jannawi will be formally lodging a complaint about the failure to provide AVL access from the beginning. This is not just about one case—it’s about advocating for systemic change to ensure other young survivors are not subjected to unnecessary trauma when seeking justice.

We remain committed to supporting survivors through every step of their journey, ensuring their voices are heard, their rights are upheld, and their courage is never overlooked.

If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out. You are not alone.
